Why do people turn to natural remedies?

In a world filled with fast-food restaurants and soda commercials, many people have started to reconsider their way of life. Most of us have grown up accepting medicine and pharmaceuticals as normal and a perfectly acceptable way of treating illnesses. However, natural remedy ads are occupying pages in magazines and celebrities present them on television. Why are so many people deciding to choose natural remedies?

  • People understand the word ‘natural’. Ingredients in pharmaceutical products are not so easy to understand unless you are a doctor. There are various chemical products and substances involved, some strange names and numbers and all this seems too much information to treat a cold. On the other hand, if you eat some honey with plants, your cough will go away. Now that’s better!
  • Natural ingredients are trustworthy. Not everyone is against pharmaceutical companies, but there have been many scandals that have stayed in people’s memories. We hear the rumors: drugs that do more harm than good, vaccines that are not safe for children or doctors who care more about money than they do about their patients. Natural remedies are not being sold and distributed by gigantic companies that have the power to influence governments.
  • Many people believe we ingest chemicals every day just with normal foods, what we drink, and what we breathe. Do we need to introduce more chemicals into our bodies to cure our ills, aches, and pains? Maybe it is time to cleanse our bodies and look to natural cures.
  • Natural remedies actually work. When you were little, your mother would cure your cold with some salt or honey and lemon. If this worked back then, shouldn’t it work now? Many doctors are prescribing fewer pharmaceutical drugs and beginning to recommend natural remedies instead. Even if they don’t work completely, they will not do you any harm!
