Natural Remedies for Joint and Muscle Pain

Natural Remedies for Joint and Muscle Pain

Whether you are a regular athlete or just getting older, joint and muscle pain can affect people of all ages and activity levels. It’s very common to treat these ailments with over-the-counter pills like ibuprofen and acetaminophen. While they do work for most people, they’re generally not the best idea to take on a daily basis. Therefore, it’s only natural (pun intended) to look for some non-drug remedies that can relieve this type of pain. Luckily, there are many options available.

For muscle pain, a variety of hold/cold treatments can do wonders. If you are an athlete, it’s always advisable to ice joints after a long workout, particularly the knees. This can reduce immediate swelling, help recovery, and prevent long-term damage. After the fact, hot topical treatments can greatly reduce pain. This can be in the form of a cream like Icy Hot (which also offers adhesive pads with the same effect), or a heating pad.

There are a wide variety of natural options to tackle joint pain. Magnesium is a critical nutrient that helps relieve muscles and joints; unfortunately, typical diets often don’t have enough of it. Magnesium supplements are a great place to start, and Epsom salts can deliver the mineral directly to the point of pain with a good soak (or for a more relaxing experience, take an Epsom salt bath!) Although it may seem counterintuitive, exercise actually helps with most types of joint pain. This has the added benefit of promoting weight loss, another helpful factor to reduce the pain.
