The artificial sweetener is out of Diet Pepsi

Pepsi cans that contain no aspartame will be on sale in the US from August. An artificial sweetener is removed from Diet Pepsi because of consumer concerns about its safety. Although, residents of the US will have a chance to drink aspartame-free Diet Pepsi, residents of the UK wouldn’t have this opportunity. Regulators in both countries still suggest that aspartame can be used in soft drinks and it is safe. PepsiCo announced that their decision is only a response to the consumer preferences.  This should increase the sales of Diet Pepsi, who fell 5% in last year, in the US. That year, sales of Diet Coke fell 6%.

PepsiCo will replace aspartame with sucralose. It is a new sweetener mixed with Ace-K (acesulfame potassium). According to vice-president of Pepsi, Seth Kaufman, aspartame is the main reason why people avoid diet soda. In the UK, consumers like Diet Pepsi so changes aren’t needed. This change will apply only to the US market on all Diet Pepsi drinks, including, Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi and Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi. Other PepsiCo drinks, like Diet Mountain Dew, will stay the same.

Aspartame was in use since 1980s. It is one of the most tested food additives. It is 200 times sweeter than sugar, but it is very low in calories. Aspartame is also known as E951. Beside Pepsi drinks, aspartame is used in many other foods and drinks. Some of them are sugar-free chewing gum and breakfast cereals. There are 100 studies that found that aspartame is safe, but only one study, published by the Ramazzini Foundation was negative. They found that rats who received a high dosage of aspartame may develop tumors.
