HIV testing can help your community

Many people in the United States believe that the AIDS epidemic is over. However, this is just a disbelief. 1.2 million people in America live with AIDS or HIV. 50.000 people are diagnosed each year. But, in order to understand this completely, you must look at localized data. For example, Philadelphia has an HIV infection rate 5 times higher that the United States national average. Some cities can even be compared with Ghana and Sierra Leone.

According to new statistics, 2/3 of all new, HIV infections occur in 3% of the counties in the US. This statistic was developed by the Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health. All of the counties can be found in rural areas and in cities. They have one thing in common, lack of resources.

The disease is contained in poor communities. According to Dr. Laurie Dill, medical professionals can be unaware of the prevalence of this virus. Getting tested is important for you and for your local community. This isn’t an individual act. These results, helps researchers map the HIV rates.

Dill’s organization is trying to help people, by giving them more access to 8 telemedicine sites through the state. They are available in general health clinics. People are able to consult with a doctor, pharmacist, social workers and mental health experts through video chat. With this, they can seek for help without announcing their status.

According to a research, the highest number of people, who live with HIV, lives in the Sought and Northwest regions. For example, in 2012, 8.629 people were diagnosed with this disease in the Northwest. However, in the same year, 22.629 people were diagnosed in the South.
